American Kestrel in Flight

The American Kestrel is not only the most common falcon in North America, but is also the smallest and most beautiful. The male has blue hued wings with one black bar on their tail feathers, while the female has orange wings with black stripes and many black bars on their tail feathers. Its nickname is ‘Windhover’ because of its ability to hover. It does this a couple different ways: they either fly into the wind at the same speed as the wind, adjusting their long tipped wings and fanning their tails. Or, they can beat their wings up to 600 X’s/minute, using specialized feathers on their wing tips to prevent stalling.
