The American Robin isn’t actually a Robin, it’s a Thrush. European settlers thought it was a Robin because the rust colored breast resembled the European Robin. However, it’s DNA, skeletal anatomy, feet, bills, behavior, and vocal characteristics all fit the Thrush lineage. It is also one of the largest Thrushes in North America. Also, they actually don’t migrate south during the winter; they just aren’t generally seen then because they spend more time roosting in trees than coming around your yard.
