The Black-Capped Chickadee is a familiar and cheerful year-round bird in Minnesota, often spotted flitting through backyard feeders, parks, and forests, all across the state. Their curious nature often brings them surprisingly close to people, especially when food is nearby. Despite their tiny size, Chickadees are built for Minnesota winters. They puff up their feathers to stay warm and can lower their body temperature at night to conserve energy during extreme cold. Their signature "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call isn't just noise either-it can change in intensity depending on the level of threat nearby. These birds also have remarkable memory skills, capable of hiding hundreds (sometimes thousands) of seeds and recalling their locations long after.
