This little fellow is named Red-bellied, although the red on its belly is usually hard to see. Besides, the name ‘Red-headed’ was already taken, and most woodpeckers have some red on their heads anyway. They don’t migrate, although some in the northern periphery will move further south during harsh winters. While not considered as cognitively advanced as Crows, or Blue Jays, Red-bellied Woodpeckers are resourceful, adaptable birds with good learning and memories.
