The Downy Woodpecker is a small but active bird found in Minnesota and across much of North America. It is known for its steady drumming and methodical foraging along tree trunks and branches. It searches for insects by tapping into bark and often revisits reliable feeding spots with persistence. It can move easily in all directions along wood surfaces, using its stiff tail for support. Frequently seen at backyard feeders, especially in colder months, it is a familiar and welcome presence. It is often confused with the hairy Woodpecker, but the Downy is smaller with a shorter bill relative to its head, while the Hairy Woodpecker appears larger with a longer, more chisel-like bill.
