Pileated Woodpecker about to peck at a treePileated Woodpecker about to peck at a tree

The Pileated Woodpecker is nearly as large as a crow and gets its name from the Latin pileatus, referring to its striking red crest. If you ever spot large rectangular holes in a tree with fresh wood chips scattered below, there’s a good chance a Pileated Woodpecker has been feeding there in search of carpenter ants. By breaking apart dead and decaying wood, these impressive birds also help return nutrients to the forest floor. Because of the variations in color and texture, I felt it would be a bit difficult to capture all the intricacies involved. It was quite a puzzle to put together, but still a fun challenge .
