This little guy is one of the most omnivorous of woodpeckers, and with a surprisingly wide-ranging diet is commonly seen feeding on the ground. His tongue is unusual, too. Compared with other woodpeckers, it doesn’t extend as far, and instead of barbs near its tip, there are hairlike processes-possibly an adaptation to his more general diet. Young Red-headed Woodpeckers look quite different from adults, with brownish heads and duller plumage before developing that unmistakable red-and-white appearance. The species also held cultural significance for the Cherokee, who regarded it as a war symbol.
